This is the sign-up for the 10.20 Still Life Social session at Hampton Park.
The event will take place from 5:45 to 7:00PM in Hampton Park, with a short talk at the beginning of our session with author, Cinelle Barnes. Exact location in the park will be emailed out the day before.
Sign-up for the park sessions are heavily encouraged. Those who choose to attend without signing up should plan to bring their own materials to the session. Please bring a blanket to sit on!
To donate towards SLS, you can do so here.
Volume Seven’s theme is “Collection of Curiosities” — an appreciation of the little objects that feel collected, discovered, or treasured for their unusual character. For our Hampton Park session, we will be joined by a special guest host: Cinelle Barnes.
Cinelle Barnes is the Philippine-born author of Monsoon Mansion: A Memoir, Malaya: Essays on Freedom, and A Way Home: A Memoir of Losing Yourself and the Beauty of Returning. She is also the editor of the New York Times “New and Noteworthy” A Measure of Belonging: Twenty-One Writers of Color on the New American South.
Cinelle is a survivor of a brain aneurysm rupture and sits on the Brain Injury Leadership Council of South Carolina and the Hub City Press National Council. She has received awards and fellowships from the Sustainable Arts Fund, the Authors League Fund, the National Endowment for the Arts, South Arts, the SC State Arts Commission, and the North American Travel Journalists Association, among others. She has served on the jury panels for several literary awards, including the inaugural Pulitzer Prize for Memoir. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in Coastal Living, Travel + Leisure, Oprah Daily, Newsweek, Southern Living, and Memoir Land, among others.
Cinelle lives in Charleston, SC, with her husband, daughter, and cat. Art greatly aided her rehabilitation from brain injury, beginning with illustrations her nurses and neurosurgeons encouraged her to make in the ICU and recovery unit.
Cinelle will join us in conversation regarding the importance of creating in daily life, followed by a session of self-guided still life and socializing!
Still Life Social is a free Charleston community art event that takes place on a monthly cadence. Each session focuses on a different still life setup and individuals of all experience levels are encouraged to attend. Basic drawing materials are provided but we encourage bringing extra materials if you have a preference or personal approach. For our park session, please bring a blanket to sit on. Participants will be emailed the day before to confirm session location in the park!
As always, we provide this event format free of charge but if you are interested in donating towards material replenishment so we can keep this series going — we are extremely grateful and appreciative. Art that gives back is our primary goal.
